Normandy is gradually
becoming a more and more popular golf destination and is
now very accessible due to the motorway and ferry-tunnel
links. It is less than one hour away from Paris, just
across the English channel and with the extension of the
A16 motorway it is only three hours away from the
Benelux countries. Normandy has preserved the charm of
its coast and countryside whilst remaining faithful to
its traditional and rich historical past. Normandy is a
great destination for holiday golf where one can combine
golf with touring, swimming, sailing, horse riding and
culture : abbeys, cathedrals and chateaus will satisfy
any art lover. With a huge coastal region we are ideally
situated from the monastery island of Mont-Saint-Michel
to the Normandy Landing Beaches, so you have a big
choice of very varied and unusual places to visit in
between a day of golf. You will notice that in
Normandy, even if the golf is important, it’s rich
historical sights, diverse landscape and local cuisine
is complementary and essential. Our Normandy cuisine
boasts Calvados apple brandy and Benedictine liqueur,
creams and cheeses, oysters and shellfish, cider and
pommeau, fish and foie gras. You will soon discover how
pleasant our region is.
Staying on a bed and
breakfast basis, we can book you ferry, Tee-off times,
restaurants and even taxi you to and from the courses.
As John is a keen golfer he can advise you on any
queries you may have and even partner you on a round
should you be the only golfer in your party. A
round of golf in France is comparably cheaper than in
the UK and most of our guests arrange 3 rounds of golf
over a two or three night stay. An example
break would consist of:
|

-
Early morning ferry departing
Portsmouth - Cherbourg
-

Golf_in_Granville
-

freshen up before visiting a local restaurant

The links par excellence, one of the best in France !
Behind the dunes, the sea … an authentic traditional links layout
that captures the essence of an 80 year by-gone era and the harsh
outdoor exposure, keeping it’s fairways both rugged, natural and in
perfect condition 365 days a year. Reputed by the local golfers as a
Scottish links - “dry feet” course - that can be played all year
round. This course was renovated in 1999 to respond technically to
the general improvement of the game in France. It is now nearly 6000
metres – 6562 yards long and meanders through natural dunes and
undulating fairways and offers several high built greens which add
difficulty to your approach. Because this is a links the greens
drain naturally thus the course has excellent all year round playing
conditions. Three short Par four’s (holes 3, 8 and 18) that require
pin point accuracy to every green and with a majority of other holes
(4, 5, 6, 13, 15 and 16) that are firstly very long and secondly
become fearsome when the wind from the sea and the inland
interferes. Out of the five Par three’s, only one, the 7th, is
straightforward. The others (2, 10, 12 and 16) are more complicated;
either because they are long or because the green is built higher
up. If you are not playing well, just enjoy the scenery and the
atmosphere. A unique feeling that dominates all link courses, in the
Irish or Scottish tradition. Under the holiday sun it’s an
enchanting place to be, under the autumn sky when the violent winds
stir the roughs it becomes an impressive, almost oppressive place to
be. It is in these unwelcoming weather conditions that the course
joins its sister courses from across the English channel, where the
true golfers begin. Nine other holes, more difficult than the first
18, tucked behind the dunes also deserve a visit…

Golf de Clécy-Cantelou
Situated on the side of a hill, in the
middle of the Normandy Suisse region , Clecy Golf Course is unique for
it’s amazing panorama. Built around a manor house this course shows it’s
first difficulty on hole n°1; an uphill long Par 4 ending with a narrow
green. On the second hole the slope becomes gentler and the next
fourteen holes meander on the high plateau through woods & hedges
offering wide & generous fairways that need accurate shots. Technical
golf is required since several fairways are undulating, every golfer has
to constantly think about his / her next shot. Bill Baker designed a
very strategically good course. The 14th is a magnificent downhill hole,
followed by a short Par 5 and a very long 16th hole Par 4 of 390 m – 427
yards parallel to the slope. But the good golfer on the 17th shouldn’t
relax, here comes a 148 yard vertical drop …and if you miss the green …
you will regret it ! The 18th , at last, is fearsome with a difficult
219 yard drive followed by a long second shot to reach the green
situated just behind the manor house… 197 yards ! And after spending
several hours in this imposing natural setting you will be happy to find
a cosy clubhouse.

Omaha Beach Golf Course
Situated only a few
miles from the D-Day Landing beaches and the Normandy American War
Cemetery of Colleville, Omaha Beach Golf Course was rated amongst
France’s Top 50 golf courses in 2001. The international standard 27 hole
course designed by architect Yves Bureau in 1986 offers three very
varied nine holes, each one being technically different but all
complementing each other. On the famous nine hole course of La Mer, only
the 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th holes avoid having problems with distances.
Sheltered from the wind because they are situated on a hill slope;
these holes are very technical, narrow and much hillier than the others.
Holes 5, 6 and 7 are again different; all quite long in distance but
above all these holes are situated on the cliff tops facing the sea and
it can get extremely windy. The signature hole is the 6th; with it’s
green right on the cliff edge, it offers spectacular views over the
charming fishing port of “Port-en-Bessin”. The second nine hole course
«Le Bocage» is set in an apple orchard. This course blends into the
natural charm of the Normandy countryside with it’s apple trees and
hedges and becomes rich in colours in the spring when the rhododendrons
blossom. When this course is combined with La Mer they become the
official 18 hole competition course where each hole is named after a
great personality of the Second World War. L’Etang offers an American
style variety of holes with lots of water. After two very flat holes,
L’Etang course slopes down to the water where 4 greens converge. At
Omaha, you cannot ignore Normandy’s heritage & history whilst playing
this course.
